Valenzano is a municipality of 17,847 inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Bari in Puglia, located about ten kilometers from the capital to the south, and is known as the home of some research centres, including the Tecnopolis scientific and technological park and the Agronomic Institute Mediterranean, the LIC Coastal Engineering Laboratory of the Polytechnic and the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Bari.
Origins of the name:
- In the oldest documents in which it is mentioned, the town is called Balentianum, Balenczanum, Balzano, which suggests the derivation of the name from the Ideo-European root “balt”, which means swamp, marsh.
- According to a fairly accepted hypothesis, the name derives from the term Valentianum, or “property of Valens”.
- The hypothesis reported by Bonaventura da Lama when speaking of the occupation of Bari by the Saracens, would attribute the name Valenzano to that of the aforementioned Greek founder of the town, whose name was, according to the historian, Valentiniano or Valenziano.
- Bonaventura also reports another hypothesis, according to which the name of the town derives from its favorable geographical position. At the time of the foundation of the village, the territory on which Valenzano would be built was in fact a large, well-ventilated countryside, therefore suitable for the sick: in Latin, Β«quia valet insanusΒ». The name Valenzanum would derive from valet insanus.
- A final hypothesis derives the name of the village from vallis sana, or “free valley”
