Capurso has approximately 15,685 inhabitants and is a municipality in the metropolitan city of Bari in Puglia. It is located about 6 km south-east of Bari, it is mainly known for the cult of the Madonna del Pozzo for which a large basilica was built in 1778, subsequently named Royal Minor Pontifical Basilica by Pius XI.
Origins of the name:Β
from the Latin Capurtius or Caprutius or from a family name ‘Capursus’ or ‘Capudursus’ or ‘caput ursi’ (Bear Head).
Hints of History:
There are various interpretations regarding the origin of the toponym Capurso , some of which are quite imaginative. According to one school of thought, the name of the city derives from Orso, son of Ajone, prince of Bari and Benevento, in the year 888 AD. Another theory, supported by Roppo, traces the origin of the name to Urso or Ursone, a name very frequent in the Middle Ages. The poet Torricella associated the name with the polar bear, but the most evocative of the interpretations is the one linked to the legend of the bear which receives great popular acclaim. According to this legend, the name of the city derives from the head of a bear (caput ursi), killed by the first inhabitants of the place, placed on a cart and pulled by oxen. The town would have arisen at the point where the chariot stopped its journey.
Monuments and places to visit in Capurso:
From an architectural point of view, its historic center stands out, with a typically medieval layout, with its lows, with the courtyards, the gaifi or vignali, the arches, the alleys, onto which the very few houses overlook.
Historical buildings:
The buildings of greatest architectural value in Capurso are the Mother Church , from the 16th century, the convent of San Francesco Da Paola, the baronial palaces and the Basilica Sanctuary of the Madonna del Pozzo in late Baroque style. In Capurso there is an oil on canvas recently attributed to Finoglio Paolo, a copy of a Christ and the Adulteress by the same author preserved in Lecce.
Religious architecture:
- Basilica of Santa Maria del Pozzo;
- Cappella del PozzoΒ (built on the well where inside, on 30 August 1705, Don Domenico Tanzella found the fresco of Santa Maria)
- Mother Church of the Ss. SalvatoreΒ (called of San Giuseppe, since the statue of the Patron Saint is venerated inside)
- Church and convent of San Francesco da Paola
- Church of the Madonna delle GrazieΒ (called Santa Lucia, since the statue of the martyr is venerated inside)
- Church of San Antonio Abate
- Chapel of the Madonna del CarmineΒ (of Purgatory)
- Chapel of San Antonio da Padua
- Chapel of San Cajetano,Β on the hill of Pacifico (privately owned)
- Votive shrine of the CrucifixΒ : It is located near the level crossing in Via Triggiano.Β The small single-room building, as reported on the external plaques, was restored in the early 1990s.Β The protagonists of the restoration were a group of devotees from Triggiano who made a weekly pilgrimage on foot towards the Sanctuary on Thursdays.
The Madonna del Pozzo:
The cult:
The devotion towards the Madonna del Pozzo is one of the most important in Apulia and in Italy. The cult of Santa Maria del Pozzo originates in 1705, when the Capurse priest Don Domenico Tanzella suffered from a serious illness, following a vision of the Holy Virgin who invited him to drink water from the well which is still found today in the Piscino district. , he recovered miraculously. On 30 August 1705, to realize the miracle he had benefited from by drinking the water from the Pool, the priest went to the well and, going down ladders inside, found a Byzantine icon on the wall facing midday. which portrayed a half-length Madonna with the blessing baby Jesus in her arms. Don Domenico temporarily placed the icon of Santa Maria in his soon-to-be-built chapel dedicated to S. Lorenzo. The miracles in that August of 1705 were prodigious and immediate and multitudes of pilgrims began to arrive in ever greater numbers in the small and then unknown village of Capurso from all over the Kingdom of Naples . From these facts the cult of the Madonna del Pozzo originated .
The solemn celebrations in honor of the Madonna del Pozzo:
The patronal feast of Santa Maria del Pozzo brings a myriad of pilgrims to Capurso on the last Sunday of August. The rites and events on holiday days are truly evocative: on Friday which precedes the big party, the procession of the “Quadro” which from the Cappella del Pozzo goes to the throne set up in the central Piazza Umberto I; on Saturday, the historical procession which ends with the imposition of golden crowns on the Virgin and Baby Jesus; on Sunday, the morning procession of votive candles with the wooden image of the Madonna del Pozzo which lasts over nine hours and, in the evening, the folkloristic procession of the Triumphal Chariot, pulled by arms by pilgrims coming from the city of Bisceglie; on Monday, the procession with the return of the “Picture” from Piazza Umberto I to the Basilica-Sanctuary. On the first Sunday of September, “The octave of the feast” is celebrated in honor of the Madonna del Pozzo, the solemn celebrations end with this last celebration.
