Triggiano is a municipality with approximately 27,165 inhabitants, located in the Metropolitan City of Bari, in the region of Apulia (Puglia). The area extends from the Adriatic coast, known as the Conca di Bari, just a few kilometers south of the regional capital. It is characterized by the presence of Lama San Giorgio, a dry riverbed that originates from the towns of Casamassima and Rutigliano and flows into the sea near the locality of the same name on the Bari coastline. Along its path, the lama features numerous caves, indicating the karstic nature of the subsoil.
Prior to the Fascist era, the municipality also included the coastal area known as San Giorgio, which was annexed to the City of Bari during that period, along with other coastal territories. Triggiano is situated about 60 meters above sea level.
Origins:
The numerous caves in the Triggiano area are evidence of human settlement dating back to the Neolithic era. Discoveries from the 3rd century AD, including a tomb unearthed in 1902 in the San Lorenzo district, suggest the probable existence of an early urban settlement.
However, the first written mention of the town dates back to 983 AD, when Archbishop Pavone granted Leone, son of Argiro, a parish church named Trivianβthe name Triggiano later appears in a 1054 will.
There are at least three theories about the town’s origin, none of which are supported by concrete documentary evidence. The first links the name to Emperor Trajan, who promoted the construction of the Via Traiana, a Roman road crossing Apulia from Benevento to Brindisi, skirting the area of Triggiano. A second theory suggests the name Trivianus refers to the three-way junction formed by Via Ponte (the townβs main internal road axis), and the current Via Carlo Alberto and Via della Marina Vecchia, which respectively lead to Bari and to the coast.
Monuments and Places of Interest in Triggiano:
Church of Santa Maria Veterana
Built in the 16th century over a pre-existing medieval place of worship dating back to 1080, which, despite its three-nave basilica layout, had become too small for the townβs religious needs.
After being severely damaged by a storm in 1681, the church was restored under the direction of Friar Filino of Molfetta. The interior iconographic decoration, completed in 1746 by NicolΓ² De Filippis, a student of Neapolitan painter Paolo De Matteis, features biblical scenes and episodes from the life of the Virgin Mary, including the Nativity, the Presentation at the Temple, the Coronation, and the Marriage to Saint Joseph.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, the church underwent multiple expansions: in 1832, a new chapel was added, and the 16th-century faΓ§ade was modifiedβalthough the rose window was preservedβwhile the interior was redecorated in Art Nouveau style. In 1982, following excavation beneath the floor, the foundations of the medieval church were discovered.
Other Monuments

- Church of the Madonna degli Angeli and Capuchin Convent
- Villa del Reddito, dating back to the 16th century, featuring towers and medieval walls, built by the Counts Tanzi of Blevio (originally from Lombardy), who were entrusted by the Duchess of Bari with the estate bordering Bari and Triggiano. Noteworthy features include frescoes in the main halls and a coats-of-arms portal with a motto. From the Tanzi family derives the name of a famous local fruit, the βPera Tanziβ, a small but flavorful pear developed through grafting and crossbreeding, suited to the area’s unique conditions.
- Rock Church of San Martino, from the Iconoclastic era, located in various caves.
- Aqualuna Fantasy Fountain, a modern artwork built in 2008 to enhance a roundabout in the newly established 167 district.
