Turi,Β Β Β an ancient Peucetian city, is an Apulian municipality of 13,050 inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Bari. It stands at 251 meters above sea level on the Murgia plateau halfway between Bari and Matera.Β An important cherry growing centre, its typical product is the Ferrovia Cherry.Β During the fascist period it was the place of detention of Antonio Gramsi, Sandro Pertini and Francesco Lo Sardo.
Hints of History:
- Roman age,Β Β In Roman times, the Peucetian town ofΒ TuriΒ was abandoned and would remain uninhabited for about a millennium.Β The territory ofΒ TuriΒ has, despite this, returned some precious testimonies from the Roman age.Β Of particular interest is the tomb inscription of the freedwoman Philona, ββdiscovered at the end of the eighteenth century on the road to Putignano. The inscription relating to a freedwoman of the Flavian emperors attests to the presence of imperial possessions in Turi.
- Middle Ages and modern age,Β Β duringΒ the Middle Ages, near the ancient Peucetian town ofΒ TuriΒ , a small double-domed rock church was built, later dedicated to San Rocco.Β They are finds that anticipate the construction of the Norman castle by a few centuries, built, most likely, by Tommaso da Frassineto, first lord ofΒ TuriΒ .
- Contemporary Age, TuriΒ is also known for having been the place of imprisonment, in the city prison, of two illustrious anti-fascist personalities: from 1928 to 1933 Antonio Gramsci, who wrote the Prison Notebooks thereΒ and the Prison LettersΒ and from 1930 to 1932 Sandro Pertini.
Monuments and places to visit in Turi:
- ChurchΒ Β (Chiesa Madre)Β Santa Maria AssuntaΒ , almost certainly dates back to the 12th century.Β Some documents attest that in 1407 it was a collegiate church.
- Church of San RoccoΒ Β Β The Church is made of regular stone ashlars and the only decoration of this compact building is a series of saw teeth placed in two rows.
- Convent and Church of Santa ChiaraΒ , The construction of the complex began in 1623, as evidenced by the commemorative plaque on the entrance portal of the Church of S. Chiara, and ended in 1631, according to what we read in a letter dated 14 March 1658.
- Church and conventΒ Β Β of San Giovanni BattistaΒ , The origins of the Franciscan settlement inΒ TuriΒ date back to an ancient chapel dedicated to St. John the Baptist, where legend has it that God worked several miracles through the Saint.Β The construction of the convent is due to the will of the Moles family who, from its settlement inΒ TuriΒ (1545) tried to introduce the Franciscan friars.
- Clock TowerΒ , a true symbol ofΒ TuriΒ βs nineteenth-century urban development , is among the most beautiful in the Bari area. It was built in 1892 by Giuseppe Schettini based on a design by the Conversano architect Sante Simone.
- Church of theΒ Madonna delle GrazieΒ , a small chapel dedicated to the Madonna della Grazia, is the only example of a religious building of such small dimensions that is present in the historic center ofΒ Turi.
- Church of SantβOronzo known as Cappellone, outside the town centre, on the road that leads to Rutigliano, you come across the Church of SantβOronzo sulla Grotta.
- Votive aedicula of the CrucifixΒ , structured as a small temple, with a pointed arch with lateral pillars, surmounted by small blind lanterns at the top, is in nineteenth-century neo-Gothic style.
- Grotta di SantβOronzoΒ : houses a rare example of an eighteenth-century majolica floor preserved almost intact.Β A valuable floor, put in place between 1727 and 1728 in conjunction with the construction, by will of the Turi community, of the sanctuary of SantβOronzo, patron saint ofΒ TuriΒ , which overlooks the hypogeum.
- Triumphal Chariot of SantβOronzoΒ , is one of the elements that characterize the history and culture of the city ofΒ Turi.
- Palazzo Marchesale di TuriΒ was certainly a medieval castle due to its position on the edge of the town, and due to the large archway leading to the internal square and is located more than 270 m above sea level.Β above sea level.
- Β TheΒ Β Municipal Palace.Β It was born as the seat of the College of the Scolopi Fathers who settled there in 1645 thanks to the bequest of the benefactor notary Santo Cavallo;Β The Pious Schools were also hosted in the Palace, which provided free education to many people from Turin until 1809, the year of its suppression.
- Clock tower .Β Originally it was thought to place the clock in a turret on the facade of the Town Hall, but then due to static problems, it was decided to build a real tower elsewhere.
