What to See in Manduria?
The city of Manduria is located on the Tarantine Murge at 79 meters above sea level. Within its territory lies Monte Bagnolo, on the border with the municipality of Sava. The area also includes an 18-kilometer stretch of coastline. The Chidro River flows through this territory—one of the most important rivers in the Salento region. In addition to being a Site of Community Importance, it is part of the “Oriented Nature Reserve of the Eastern Taranto Coast.”
Founded by the Messapians (the ancient inhabitants), Manduria still preserves numerous traces of its ancient past, including the megalithic walls surrounded by the remains of the moat that once encircled the city, as well as the Necropolis. The city fought various wars with the nearby Republic of Taranto.
Around 266 BC, Manduria became part of the Roman dominion along with other Messapian centers in Salento, following the conquest of Brindisi. During Hannibal’s campaign in Italy, Manduria sided with the cities rebelling against Rome, which led to a harsh retaliation: historical sources report the deportation of thousands of men (Q. Fabius consul oppidum in Sallentinis Manduriam vi cepit. Ibi ad tria milia hominum capta et ceterae praedae aliquantum).
Historic Center:
The historic center of Manduria is made up of a network of narrow, winding streets, where it is quite easy to get lost without a good knowledge of the area.
Among the main monuments in this area are the Romanesque Collegiate Church (Chiesa Madre), dating back to the medieval period, the Clock Tower, noble residences built in various eras, and sections of the ancient Messapian city walls.
Recently, excavations have uncovered coins, vases, and several Romanesque tombs; this has happened more than once due to the city’s millennia-old history.
Religious Architecture:
- Chiesa Madre (15th century)
- Church of Saint Lucia (19th century)
- Church of Saint Benedict (16th century)
- Church of the Immaculate Conception (17th century)
- Parish – Oratory of Saint John Bosco
