Hints of History:
The origin of Grottaglie is in the settlements that have followed one another since the Paleolithic , and in particular in the areas of Riggio and Pezza Petrosa . According to some, it is considered the birthplace of the father of Latin literature Quintus Ennius . Necropolis of Pezza Petrosa between Villa Castelli and Grottaglie. The most historical remains can be traced back to the Middle Ages, when the habit of living in caves took hold in the ravines. In fact, not only the houses, but also the stairs, the paths, the canalization and water flow works date back to this period. An important Byzantine testimony in the Grottaglie area is the Gravina di Riggio which features Basilian frescoes of great quality although they are in precarious conditions.
Monuments and places to visit in Grottaglie:
- Episcopio Castle. The Episcopo castle was built at the end of the 14th century by the archbishop of Taranto Giacomo d’Atri, who also built the walls and the mother church. The original nucleus, with keep and eastern sector, was subsequently expanded, with a baroque face. The Episcopio Castle is located in the Ceramics District, that is, the oldest part of the city, the Castle was for centuries the symbol of the power of the feudal Taranto bishops . Today the castle is differentiated by the presence of the ancient internal tower, over 28 meters high, structured on 4 intermediate floors, where the bishops had their seat. Two exhibitions are held in the rooms of the Castle every year: the CERAMICS EXHIBITION (August-September) and the NATIVITY EXHIBITION (December-January).
- Gravina del Fullonese. To the west of the city of Grottaglie , on the slopes of Monte Fellone, stands the Fullonese ravine, almost a kilometer long and 40 meters deep, full of caves carved into the rock dating back to the 200th century. The ravine is characterized by rich vegetation, smells of scrub Mediterranean thanks to thyme, mallow and thistles. It is rich in fruit trees, oaks and olive trees.
- Mother Church. Built in 1372 by Archbishop Giacomo D’Adri, it is the work of the architect Domenico Di Martina. Created in late Romantic style, it should be an extension of an existing building. On the facade there is an oculus on the perimeter of which a tangle of vegetal motifs is engraved, with bas-reliefs depicting Christ on the throne, the Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin. Under the portico, characterized by a complex carving of acanthus leaves and supported by two octagonal columns that rest on oxen supported by brackets, opens the entrance also enriched by a mix of animal and plant motifs.
- Church of the Madonna del Carmine. Built on an ancient cave in which a fresco of the Virgin Mary was preserved, it was built in the 15th century after the donation of the Collegiate Maria Santissima Annunziata (mother church of Grottaglie ) by the Reverend Don Romano de Romano.
Ceramics district:
Due to its ancient ceramic tradition, Grottaglie is among the 36 Italian ceramic cities recognized by the AiCC-Italian Association of Ceramic Cities.
The main products in Grottaglie ceramics are:
- The “ Bianchi di Grottaglie ” is the most characteristic rustic and popular one, characterized by a color palette made up of rotten green, yellow ocher, blue and manganese.
- The “ Capasoni ” are large containers intended to contain wine.
- The “ Pumi ”, a classic Grottagliese symbol.
Crafts:
A peculiar productive specialization of the Grottaglie area is the production of ceramics , with which the municipality is often identified. This tradition, transmitted today to younger generations thanks to the work of the local Art Institute, is an important tourist attractor for the town.
