Hints of History:
There were several families who ruled Ugento : the Orsini, the D’Aquino, the Della Ratta, the De Balzo. In 1537 it was destroyed by Barbarossa’s troops. Subsequently the city came under the control of the Pandone, the Vaaz de Andrata, and finally the D’Amore. During the Roman Empire, Ugento became part of Rome’s great expansionist project, becoming an allied municipality. During the Punic wars against Carthage he allied himself with Hannibal, in the vain hope of regaining his autonomy. During this period it was subjected to several barbaric destructions. Ugento was refounded thanks to the Basilian monks, who rebuilt it. The city took on a Greek appearance and was equipped with new walls.
