Rodi Garganico, called Rodi until 1863, is a municipality in the province of Foggia in Puglia with approximately 3,500 inhabitants. It is part of the Gargano National Park and the Gargano community.
A popular seaside resort, it has been awarded the Blue Flag several times for the quality of its bathing water. (the last one in 2011), from the Foundation for Environmental Education.
Rodi Garganico is located on the northern coast of the Gargano , in the center of a stretch of coast approximately 12 kilometers long between San Menaio to the east and Foce Varano , a hamlet of Ischitella , to the west. Twenty nautical miles (about 37 km) across the Adriatic in a north-eastern direction separate it from the archipelago of the Tremiti Islands .
Territory
The coast, which turns north, is characterized by long beaches whose continuity is interrupted by the rocky point on which the town of Rodi Garganico stands . The sand that makes up the beaches is clear and characterized by particularly fine grain size.
- Levante beachΒ :Β Β The beach, sheltered from the mistral winds thanks to the screen offered by the port, extends in length for about 4 km almost to the beach ofΒ San MenaioΒ , and is more than 60 meters wide near the town.
- West beachΒ :Β Β The west beach extends to the west of the city and includes the βSotto la Costaβ beach, theΒ Β SantaΒ BarbaraΒ Bay beach Β and the Lido del sole beach, where most of the Rhodian tourist infrastructure is concentrated.
The beach extends to the municipal border with Ischitella for a total length of 4950 m and is formed in the westernmost stretch by a long series of sand dunes that slowly slope into the sea, while in the first 400 meters west of the port there is gravel -sandy due to the presence of pebbles transported by the washing action of rains and tides.
Monuments and places of interest in Rodi Garganico:
- Sanctuary of the Madonna della LiberaΒ , aΒ sanctuary for over 30 years, is the place where the painting of the Madonna della Libera has been venerated for centuries.Β Its construction must be linked to the need to expand the chapel which had now become insufficient to accommodate the growing turnout of the faithful.Β The central nave dates back to the early eighteenth century.Β The architectural style is Apulian Baroque.
- Church of the Santissimo CrocifissoΒ :Β closed following the damage suffered by the earthquake of 1679Β .Β After the restoration carried out by Michele Paolozzi in 1695Β , it was assigned to theΒ Β Confraternity of Adoration and DeathΒ .
- Church of San NicolaΒ :Β next to the church stands a bell tower more than 20 meters high, with three floors, whose construction took place in two different periods: the first part, a quadrangular tower in Romanesque style, was completed in the 17th century during the Norman domination.
- Church of Santa BarbaraΒ :Β located 700 meters from the town centre, beyond the town walls, it is the oldest.Β Its existence is documented already in a writing from 1091 as a dependency of the abbey of Benevento.
- Church of San Pietro,Β Β located in a small square, is the oldest urban church.Β In ancient times it was part of a convent built between 1216 and 1221 when, as it is said, Saint Francis of Assisi went on a pilgrimage to the cave of San Michele in Monte Sant’Angelo.
- Church of the Santo SpiritoΒ β Capuchin Convent:Β built in 1538 following the typical plan of Capuchin monasteries, it also includes a church, consecrated in 1678.Β The complex, in addition to hosting ancient tombs of ecclesiastics and lay people in its basement, has a small cloister of notable architectural value.
Natural areas:
- Citrus oasisΒ :Β Β the centuries-old citrus production is demonstrated by theΒ Β citrus gardensΒ Β that surround the town.Β Driving along the rural roads that go up towards the hills from the seafront toΒ San MenaioΒ , it is possible to observe vast crops of oranges and lemons, which until the last century were exported all over the world.Β In May, the flowering period, it is possible to perceive the intense scent of orange blossoms (orange blossoms) from all over the coast.
- Stacks and trabucchiΒ :Β small stacks enrich the stretch of coast on which the town stands.Β The largest and best known is the one called “of the Dog” (or “of the Lion”) due to its particular shape which recalls a dog or a lion that watches over the town from the dangers of the sea.Β On the rocky top of the cliff to the east of the stacks there is an ancient trebuchet, an imposing wooden structure traditionally used for fishing, typical of the Gargano and as such protected by the national park.Β The trebuchet of Rodi Garganico was recently rebuilt during the construction of the new tourist port.
