What to visit in Mesagne?
Mesagne is a municipality of 26,513 inhabitants of the province of Brindisi in Puglia. the town is the third largest municipality in Salento after Nardò and Francavilla Fontana. There are numerous Baroque traces that can be found, so much so that together with Ostuni it is the richest city in this sense in Puglia. In fact, the historic center is very characteristic with narrow streets and whitewashed houses. In 2016 it was elected the longest-lived city in Italy, as in July of the same year it had 5 centenarians and 314 nonagenarians.
Hints of History:
The town developed around 1550 thanks to rich feudal lords and nobles. It was at the center of a military expedition led by Architas of Taranto in 360 BC. From this Messapian period there remain a series of burials found in the town centre. In the current Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, in the wide area between Porta Grande and the Church of the Franciscans, around the 16th century, there were the workshops of artisans, tanners and shoemakers.
