Brindisi is an Italian municipality, capital of the province of the same name in Puglia with 86,053 inhabitants. The city appears to be one of the most populous centers in the Salento area in Puglia, it plays an important cultural-commercial role, due to its fortunate position leaning towards the East, thanks also to its natural port on the Adriatic Sea.
Origins of the name
From the word Brention: deer’s head, connected to the Albanian bri, brî – pl. brirë, brinë (“horn”, “branching”) from Proto-Albanian *brina; *brena. The name of the city therefore seems to refer to the shape of its port which recalls the shape of the animal’s head.
Hints of History
Brindisi An ancient city, gateway to the Far East , at a crossroads of cultures and people, it has experienced a fluctuating history, characterized by golden periods and periods of decadence, always in close correlation with its geographical position and the importance of its famous port. In 267 BC Brindisi was conquered by the Romans and became a very important port of call for the East, then it was elevated to the rank of municipality in 83 BC and the citizens of Brindisi were recognized as having precious Roman citizenship. The city experienced its golden age during the Roman period and enjoyed important road connections with Rome, from here through the Appian and Traiana consular roads . In 1070 it was conquered by the Normans and became an integral part of the Duchy of Puglia and principality of Taranto. It was severely hit by the Black Death and slowly regained its ancient demographic dimensions thanks to important commercial-migratory flows of Greeks, Albanians and Slavs, who arrived there from overseas. With the subsequent Bourbon domination there was a period of economic growth, with Ferdinand I. During the Second World War Brindisi became the seat of the allied command for the lower Adriatic Sea, acquiring considerable strategic importance and paying for this role with various bombings in the old part .
