Castel del Monte dates back to the 13th century, built by Emperor Frederick II on the western Murge plateau in Puglia, in the current hamlet of the same name in the municipality of Andria, 17 km from the city, near the town of Santa Maria del Monte , on the top of a hill, 540 meters above sea level, today a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Castel del Monte is one of the most visited sites in Italy, a destination for countless European and non-European tourists.
Hints of History:
Castel del Monte was also a place used as a prison. Under the Kingdom of Manfredi Marino da Eboli was imprisoned there after the conspiracy of 1253. Under the jurisdiction of Charles I, however, the young children of Manfred with Henry of Castile were imprisoned there, completely secretly and under the custody of the castellan Golardo Saumeri.
Starting from the 17th century, a long period of abandonment followed, during which the castle was stripped of its furnishings and marble wall decorations (traces of which remain visible only behind the capitals) and became not only a prison but also a shelter for shepherds, bandits and political refugees.
The building has an octagonal shape and at each corner there is an octagonal tower. The octagon which corresponds to the part of the internal courtyard completes the construction. The diameter of the castle is 40 m, while the diameter of each tower is 7.90 m. The towers are 23 m high and slightly exceed the height of the walls of the internal courtyard (20.50 m).
Due to its octagonal shape, with as many octagons placed at the vertices of the central plan, it is possible to assume that the building was built to recall the shape of a crown; this would explain the function of Castel del Monte, that is, a further affirmation of imperial power, a monument.
According to Licinius, the building was an integral part of the castle system of the kingdom, while it is not, as some amateur scholars maintain, a mysterious construction built by the Templars (very unlikely also considering the disagreements between Frederick II and the Templars) or the fruit of other legends.
